Well, Its Saturday night, and what am I doing...sitting at home. I'm on call so not much really to do. I could clean/laundry but thats no fun. Only worked till 12:30 today. We will see how the night/tomorrow goes!
One consult today (that's what it is called when another service, usually the primary service-pediatrician, asks surgery to see a patient). 13 year old boy in the PICU (peds intensive care unit). On Jan 13th his dad says that he began having seizures. He had been perfectly healthy up until this point. He was taken to an outlying hospital and then transferred to our children's hospital. He was having uncontrollable seizures so they put him in a medicine induced coma. He still has not woken up and they do not expect him to. He has had multiple surgeries on his brain, has had a trach placed (breathing tube in his neck). He is in kidney failure. We were asked to see him to put a tube in his stomach called a gastrostomy tube to feed him. Basically from the sounds of it, he will never wake up again. How sad is that. His dad was in his room while I was there. He looked so lonely it broke my heart. He said his wife, boys mother, died 2 years ago. I just cant imagine. Sure makes you thankful for what you have!!
On a happier note, I picked up my Bridesmaids dress for my friend Navonna's wedding. It fits perfect, I'm so excited, no alterations! The wedding is in June, which will most likely be the next time I am home. I can hardly wait!!!
I sat in the backyard this afternoon for about 45 minutes in my swim suit. I'm so happy to have warm weather. It really isn't that terribly warm yet but much better than the snow at home today :) All of you that are jealous should just come visit :) I hope the weather lasts out here and it doesn't turn cold again!

Someone asked why the little boy will never come out of the coma. Best I can tell from reading his chart he somehow came down with a virus in his brain and he is now brain dead. (this virus isnt like a virus everyone gets during the winter, etc.)
