Another fun filled day at work! Busy but nothing overly exciting to report. I only worked 10 hours so that is always nice and I got to eat lunch! With this job I have learned to not always take things like this for granted.
I saw my first 23 week gestation baby today. She is tiny except for her belly being as big as her head. She is very swollen right now. She probably will not survive as her body is septic from infection. It is sad to see but sometimes I think it will probably be a blessing. This baby would most likely never live a normal life if she were to survive. Guess we will wait and see.
I have my first official favorite patient. He is alittle over a month old now. He was born with an omphalocele which means his guts were not inside his belly but in a membrane on the outside. I had met his mom/dad/siblings in the office prior to his arrival as they knew this prior to his delivery. We like to try and meet with the parents before because delivery day can be rather hectic and the baby needs to have surgery that day. Well in the office I fell in love with the family. They were so sweeet. They had just moved to AZ from Nebraska. The little man was born in early December and did fine from his omphalocele. We followed him until it was healed and then we eventually sign off of the patients. He is still in the NICU because he wasnt eating very well. Well last week we had to do bilateral inguinal hernias on him as well as a circumcision. The surgery went fine but he had to go back on the ventilator and it took him until today to get off of it. I was so happy to go by and see him off of it today and awake. Since Friday I have seen alot of him again as well as his parents and they are such nice people. On Friday his mom was by herself as her husband had to attend some class and I thought she was going to puke she was so nervous. I kept running into her in the halls while he was in surgery and she was about in tears. I guess it is just so nice to see parents that care. Alot of our babies I have never met/seen the parents and we have taken care of these patients for over a month. Im sure they are there at some point and I realize when you have other children it is very hard. So anyway..hopefully he will be back to working on eating and be going home soon.
Thats about all I have for today. Off to get a few more things done and then early to bed. I didnt sleep well last night.
